Episode # 42

How to stay motivated in these times

Is this lockdown period wearing you down emotionally? Are you struggling to feel motivated to do anything productive? Then this episode is especially meant for you.

Hi and welcome to Action-Ables. If you’re a new listener, my name’s Paden. I’m a performance life coach and the CEO of Up It. If you’re a regular listener, thank you for coming back, I appreciate it immensely.

Going through this pandemic situation is certainly challenging. In this episode, I want to talk to you about how your feelings and emotions influence your motivation levels. So if you’re feeling low about this situation you’re not alone and let’s talk about it!

Amidst everything that’s happening, it’ll take some effort to tune in with your feelings. But you should take the time out to identify your primary thoughts about what’s happening. Especially, if you’re feeling the blues of being unable to go out. Take some time out to identify your thoughts and feelings.

Is it fear, is it anger or frustration. All these feelings are natural and ignoring them is not a great idea and neither will it be helpful. Instead,  if you take the time to understand your feelings and then acting accordingly, it’ll help you accept the situation for what it is.

Yes, these are uncertain times and nobody knows what’s going to happen. But isn’t that how life’s always been? Given, these are extraordinary circumstances, just like everything other situation in life, we don’t get to decide what happens, we only get to choose how we respond to the situation.

Recently, I was chatting with a friend who told me about how most of his friends were struggling to be productive. And honestly that’s where I decided to do this episode.

I also want to gently impress upon the idea that this isn’t happening to you alone. It’s not something you as an individual are facing. It isn’t about you. We need to remember that we are all in this situation together. There’s an intense feeling of dissociation and demotivation in the air. And unless we consciously deal with it, we can be sucked into viewing this situation for far worse than it actually is.

If you’re listening to this then you’re among the lucky, blessed and fortunate people who have access to wifi and warm home among countless other blessings. Let’s take a moment to remind ourselves that through these desperate times, we’re still fortunate and we are blessed!

So if you’re feeling hopeless and frustrated being at home, that’s understandable. But you also get to decide how you want to deal with these emotions. There’s always a better way to handle stressful emotions. Right now you may not be able to deal with your emotions how you normally would, so it’ll help to create a way that works for you in this particular time.

One thing you can do being at home, when you feel lower emotions such as anger, frustration, hopelessness, physically move your body. Get up and go to another room, not necessarily even to do something else, but the act of getting up itself will distract your thoughts.

In addition, here are two more things you can do to stay motivated.

First is to create a routine for yourself. Decide upon a time to wake up, exercise, have your meals, work, and sleep. Like clockwork. It may sound boring, but the key to staying motivated is to allow your mind minimum room and time to think negative thoughts. The best way to do this is to have a time to do things during the day. Having a routine for yourself is helpful not just for such times but also in life generally.

And second,  is to start doing something you’ve always wanted to do. A painting, gardening,  a pet project, learning a new language, anything you want. You can watch this week’s YouTube video we made especially for you on 7 steps you can take to start doing something you want. What better way to stay motivated than by doing something you really want to do!

Episode #41

Too Much Time

Being isolated at home is difficult. What with having too much time on hand.

Hi and welcome to Action-Ables. If you’re a new listener, my name’s Paden. I’m a performance life coach and CEO of Up It. If you’re a returning listener, welcome back, I appreciate you tuning in.

Since we’re going through this COVID 19 situation, and are isolated at home. Let’s talk about the irony.

Before the outbreak, for most of us it felt like there was too little time and now, being home it feels like there’s just too much of it. How do we deal with this situation?

How do you wrap your mind around being at home constantly. Without going nuts? It’s important to have our wits about ourself. Being cut off from our normal routine, friends, colleagues can be extremely difficult.

Let’s start with recognising the situation that we are in. Yes, we’re in the middle of a huge global crisis, and the problem of having too much time on our hand can be a challenge in itself. Because it can cause you to overthink and even cause anxiety in some people. It may also cause more conflicts with family members because frankly, we’re not used to having each other in our faces all the time, right.

So, what can you do with the time that you have to spend at home. There are several things you can do.

First off, how about getting intentional about how you want to spend this time. Instead of getting stressed and negative about how you miss your office, your friends it’s making a small mindset change such as ‘I need to be home, I might as well make the most of it. So rather than feeling like you’re forced to stay at home, what if you looked at as an opportunity and asked yourself what you’d like to do most with your time.

Is there a particular activity, hobby that you’ve been meaning to do? Now’s the perfect time to get started. Is it a new language, instrument, skill that you’ve always wanted to learn. And now you also don’t have an excuse of not having enough time! So treat this as a time you can use to do the things you’ve always wanted to do.

Keeping yourself occupied with things to do will not only keep you away from feeling stressed, but it can also lead to less tension with other family members.

Second, thing you can consider doing is hanging out with a friend online. Schedule a video call with a friend and just connect. While social distancing, some people may feel emotionally disconnected from their friends and loved ones. So, it needs an initiative on both ends to stay connected and video calls are a huge blessing!

Third thing, you can do is think about your goals! What you’ve always wanted to do. Think of those immediate things you want to do once it’s safe to go out and also about the long term goals you want to achieve.

In addition to these three things, here’s something you can do.

I call it the 14 day starting ritual. For the next two weeks while you’re at home, think of starting one thing, it can be anything that’ll bring you joy and happiness. Right now, you have the time to do it. What can it be and how you can do this for the next 14 days at the same time every day. Doing it at the same time for the next 14 days is key!

So, hopefully, at the end of a 14 days of quarantine, you won’t just have started doing a thing you enjoy consistently, but hey it’s also a great way start to a new habit!

I hope this helps you. I’m wishing each and everyone of you love and strength as we brave these challenging times.
